This course provides the knowledge and practical skills for a range of job roles in welding and fabrication. It is structured around the level 3 Engineering apprenticeship framework.

What will I be doing?

For this Diploma, you'll study five units:

  • Health and Safety
  • Welding and Fabrication Principles
  • Manual metal-arc (MMA) welding
  • Manual metal-arc (MMA) welding
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process

In addition, you'll also cover 2 practical NVQ units.

The course is assessed through a range of methods including:

  • Practical workshop activities
  • Short written tests
  • Online multiple-choice exams

You'll also develop your employability skills and have the opportunity to retake your Maths/English GCSE where appropriate.

What is expected of me?

To enrol on this course, you'll need:

  • A suitable level 2 Engineering/welding qualification and GCSE grade A* to C in Maths.

Full commitment to attendance is required, as is the ability to work independently and as part of a team. You should also have a strong desire to work in the engineering industry, abide by the college ethos and be willing to participate in improving your level of academic subjects.

What comes next?

The course is designed to lead learners towards an apprenticeship in fabrication and welding.

Additional information

You’ll need Personal Protective Equipment, such as boots and overalls, the cost of which is approximately £40. You’ll also need to supply your own stationery and folders.
