Access your future as an adult learner

30 September 2022

If you left school years ago but now want to change your career or progress your skills through further study, college is a great choice for you. Especially our Access to Higher Education courses!

Access courses are your pathway to a degree, and we have a growing community of adult earners at college studying Access programmes. They’re a fantastic re-introduction to the classroom if you’ve been out of education for a while, or if you’re looking for a new challenge to broaden your horizons. It’s an opportunity for you to refresh your study skills, develop your knowledge, build your confidence, and gain the qualifications you need for university. The courses are designed to support and prepare you for degree-level study or for taking the next step in your career with confidence, so you can make it a success at Coleg Gwent.

Free and flexible courses

We know that fitting education into your busy life can be a challenge. But we’re here to help you balance your lifestyle and support you to achieve your goals. You can study an Access course on a full time or enhanced part time basis (enhanced part time means you can study a full time course in condensed hours), and what’s more, the courses are free!

Our tutors understand that you may have other commitments in your life, such as childcare and work. So, they’re on hand to offer guidance on the help and support that’s available. With the flexibility our courses offer, lots of our students work alongside their studies. Then thanks to our free courses, they don’t have to worry about the expense of paying for their studies either.

The start of something new

Our Access courses are designed for adult learners to open doors to a whole host of careers. Our programmes span sectors such as nursing, policing, forensic science, social work, education, psychology and science, as well as a brand-new Access to Medicine course too. The Access to Medicine programme is ideal for students who want to apply for medicine at university but didn’t get the grades they needed in their recent A Level exams. It’s been approved by Cardiff University amongst others, so it is a prestigious qualification that is accepted for entry to medical school.

So, if you’ve been out of the classroom for some time or didn’t get the grades you needed for university, there are some great options open to you at Coleg Gwent!

Pathway to success

Over 180 adult learners returned to college last year and successfully completed their Access to Higher Education courses with Coleg Gwent. They’re now progressing to university to study their degree courses thanks to the grades they achieved and the skills they learnt at our top performing college.

We saw some excellent results across all our campuses in our Access pathways last year:

  • 48% of our students achieved the equivalent of three GCE A-level grades of A, B, B (or above)
  • Of these, 20 of our students achieved Distinctions in all seventeen Level 3 graded assessments
  • The overwhelming majority of our learners are now progressing on to HE courses, including in skills shortage areas within Health Care and Health Science.

It’s never too late to return to education and change your prospects or career path later in life. It’s also still not too late to join an Access to Higher Education course at college. So, take the first steps towards getting your degree and apply now to make it a reality at Coleg Gwent!
