Changing the Face of Automotive Technology and Engineering

23 September 2021

The Engineering sector has come a long way in recent years, with many advanced specialisms to explore in Automotive, Motorsport, Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aeronautical and Electrical Engineering. The face of the industry has changed. Work environments have modernised to keep up with the shift towards high-tech future-proof engineering. So, at Coleg Gwent, we’re shifting our focus to set you up for the future too. You’ll learn through a mixture of hands-on experience in the workshop, and understanding the theory that underpins your practice. So, as an engineering student, you won’t just be struck in a classroom.

New engineering and automotive technology developments are helping us solve some of the biggest issues of the twenty-first century, like climate change. So, if you’ve got a creative side, enjoy practical tasks, thrive on problem-solving, and have a scientific or mathematical mind, engineering and automotive technology could be great options for you to make a real difference.

Your Future in Automotive Technology & Engineering Starts at Coleg Gwent

Coleg Gwent is a fantastic place to study for a successful future as an engineer or automotive specialist. You’ll learn the latest techniques and have access to state-of-the-art equipment at our City of Newport Campus, Crosskeys Campus and Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone. We’ve developed our curriculum and invested in new facilities at our campuses so you can learn the skills you need for a successful future in this evolving industry.

engineering learners and equipment

The City of Newport Campus has undergone a refurbishment of all the workshops and changing spaces for the new academic year, making the facilities bright, airy and spacious. So, our Engineering, Automotive and Mechanics learners work in modern, fresh workshops that reflect the contemporary vehicles and equipment they’re working on.

Meanwhile, our Automotive courses have moved into the realm of electric vehicles to keep up with the latest developments in the sector, and we have some intriguing new courses in the pipeline.  We’ll be introducing part-time programmes in robotics and short courses on inspection, testing and installation of electric vehicle charging points. These new areas give you the opportunity to train for a career that’s future-proof!

If you study our Automotive courses, you’ll be working on a brand-new Tesla Model 3, VW E Golf, 2 Nissan Leafs, BMW I3, and an Electric Nissan Light Van, gaining skills to work on the electric vehicles of the future. We also have all the necessary electric vehicle tooling and diagnostic software, new Snap-On vehicle lifts, new lathes, new milling machines including a CNC 5 axis machine, a new construction simulator and a range of engineering rigs and specialist kit.

This means that all our Automotive, Motorsport, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering learners can experience the latest equipment as part of their training. Our fantastic suite of new facilities complements our up-to-date curriculum in materials technology including carbon fibre composites, motorsport, manufacturing and aeronautical facilities in electric vehicles. So, with this fantastic new equipment at Coleg Gwent, you’ll soon be engineering your way to a bright future!

After hearing about the transformation of the Engineering and Automotive department at the City of Newport Campus, Senedd Member, John Griffiths, visited the department this September to see the new facilities available for learners. With a keen interest in electric vehicles and lowering carbon emissions, he commented;

“Coleg Gwent have recognised the type of green skills our local and national economies will need in the years ahead and responded proactively in the delivery of their engineering teaching, which includes their automotive and electric vehicle courses. We will only reduce our carbon emissions by investing in cleaner and greener technologies and I am pleased to see this happening in Newport. It’s great to see the students at Coleg Gwent getting involved in this type of exciting learning and work. The skills they are developing on these courses will be critical for what they choose to do next and their future aspirations.”

As a further education college, we’re determined to play a vital role in upskilling the workforce of the future, helping to facilitate a zero-carbon world and tackle twenty-first century issues head-on with engineering expertise.
