22 October 2021

Today is’andwe’re doing exactly that to demonstrate our support in showing racism the red card. As a college, we’re proud to be adiverse and inclusivecommunity where there’s no place for racismand everybody is treated fairly. Thisis underpinned every day in our practices, buttoday is a chance to make a stand as we unite against racism by wearing redto showoursupport.

To coincide with, we’re also proud to announce thatwe’renowaffiliated with the Black FE Leadership Group(BFELG). This means we cancollaborateonashared vision to eradicate racism in thefurther educationsector and further the interests of black students, colleagues and leaders.

We’re fully aligned to the BFELG’s beliefs, including:

  • Every individual has the right to live a fulfilling life.
  • For as long as systemic racism exists, everyone’s potential will be held back.
  • An anti-racist education helps people to define and challenge themselves, widen their experience and shape their world.
  • An antiracistfurther educationsystem unlocks the full potential of all individuals, organisationsand communities.

AtColeg Gwent, we’recommitted to making a stand and doing our bit to drive positive and impactful change, in line with Welsh Government’s vision of an anti-racist Wales. Our support extendsfarbeyond ‘Wear Red Day’ and Black History Month– it’s ingrained inourcore valuesand reinforced by ourdiversity charterevery day.

Principal, Guy Laceyexplained:

“’Wear red day’ is an important chance for us all to show that we are not going to accept racism in ourcollege. This comes at a time when our Government in Wales is developing an equality plan to achieve the vision of ‘A Wales that is Anti-racist by 2030’. We all need to play our part to achieve that and our affiliation to the BFELG and working with them is a commitment to anti-racism that I am proud to have made.”

In support of anti-racism, Guy Lacey has been involved in recording an episode of‘Anti Racism in Action’for. This is a series ofninevideos which are being released weekly and have beenorganisedby theBFELG.Look out for our Principal Guy Lacey in next week’s episode of FENewsAnti Racism in Action!
